Saturday I Went Out Voting….

Saturday I Went Out Voting….

I’ve never before voted early. I’ve never before even known it was possible, except for expatriates, etc.
This past weekend, I put on somewhat-better-than-the-usual-Saturday-gardening clothes and my Obama button and went (as promised here last week) to my county seat (pop. 2,226) of Pittsboro, NC, and eagerly cast my vote. [...]

Chocolate Town Redux
I’m back in Hershey, PA this week. The last time I was here I saw the “Kiss Kar”,

so I thought it was ironic that while driving down the road last week in my small town of Pittsboro, NC I came across the Oscar Mayer “Wienermobile“.

Are there any cars like this that I’m missing? [...]

First Fall Thankful Thursday

Posted on: Thursday, October 2nd, 2008 in: 27312, Bear Creek, Musings, Pittsboro
This is Sweetie… and I love her. Sweetie is one of the three original kittens my husband brought home shortly after he moved here. She is the matriarch of the feline herd. She doesn’t have to “say” anything, a look will suffice when any of the others are out of sorts. Sweetie comes and goes as she pleases, including in and out of the house. Not long after their arrival, Sweetie and her sister, “Tipper”, each had a small litter of kittens. Tipper was less than a loving mother to her babies and it was amazing to watch Sweetie step up and take her nieces and nephews as her own. Sweetie is the dog’s favorite “toy” and the only real competition Sadie has in the house. And she’s my snuggle bug when I go to bed at night (remember, my husband works nights).

So, for all these reasons and so much more, the last thing I want is for Sweetie to hurt. But for the last week she’s been walking around holding her front left leg/foot up off the ground. She refused to put ANY weight on it and pulled away from me when I would try to examine her paw. Enough was enough. It was time to break down and head to Chapel Hill.

I’m happy to say that there are no broken bones or sprains in Sweetie’s leg. Dr. Droke thinks she’s either 1) simply jammed it jumping off something relatively high - I mean she IS carrying a few extra LBS…15.5 to be exact or 2) is experiencing pain and swelling due to a bite/puncture wound.

We came home with a vial of pain medication and as early as this morning after only two doses Sweetie is showing signs of improvement.

So today I’d like to express my gratitude and thankful heart, specifically, to Cole Park Veterinary Hospital but also to all veterinary clinics in general. I’ve noticed that all my favorite bloggers are animal owners and lovers so I know you can appreciate your treasured veterinarian and staff and the message I’m putting out here today. Our animals (okay, four-legged children) bring so much…chaos into our lives I don’t think any of us would want it any other way. My life would not be complete without my cats, dog, horse…even the raccoons and opossum that visit nightly make for some great laughs and awesome pictures.
Just don’t wear black or blue when you visit my house - there’s enough animal hair on the furniture to stuff a king-sized pillow.
Thank you, God, for our four-legged loved ones…

Southern Independent Booksellers in Mobile

I’m back now from a quick, exhausting, but really fun trip to Mobile, Alabama for the Southern Independent Booksellers Association (SIBA) conference. The exhausting part came from missing an early flight out of Newark Saturday morning and then being delayed by two hours getting back to Newark on Sunday. So goes [...]

Pam Cash-Roper of Pittsboro, NC, a Republican, Spoke at the Democratic Convention and Explained Why She’s Voting for Obama

Posted on: Friday, September 5th, 2008 in: 27312, Fearrington, Pittsboro, Politics

In prime time, five “regular” Americans spoke at the Democratic Convention. By far the best of the five, in my humble opinion, was Pamela Cash-Roper, a retired nurse from Chatham County, Pittsboro, NC. (And I’m not just saying that because I’m a resident of Chatham County.)The N&O did a nice story. Below, courtesy of the Chatham Journal, she talks about the response in Chatham County to her high national profile: More Republicans for Obama.

I’m Thankful For Our Public Servants

Posted on: Thursday, September 4th, 2008 in: 27312, Bear Creek, Musings, Pittsboro

Despite my partiality to public servants (I am the wife of a police officer), I think these men and women, much like teachers and nurses, are far under appreciated, disrespected by many and, yes, underpaid.

I wanted to pay homage to these people on this Thankful Thursday because I took particular note of the services they performed during the half marathon event last weekend.

You can’t literally shut a city down, closing major thoroughfares on one of the busiest days of the year in one of the largest summer tourist beaches on the east coast without a LOT of cooperation and collaboration. On top of the typical “last hurrah for the summer” visitors, VA Beach was swarmed with the runners and their friends and families last weekend, making for a boiling pot.

I can assure you, the majority of the fire, rescue and police personnel that were there were working “off-duty”. They volunteered to commit to working this event on what would normally be a scheduled day off for them.

I tip my hat to the supervisors of these fine organizations and the city leaders who assuredly put in countless hours of preparation coordinating this event and solidifying my safety and the safety of hundreds of thousands of others.

I have been witness to what it takes to pull an event like this together (Halloween on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill - UNC). Truly, the general public has no idea the effort that is put forth and I’m not convinced that they realize that the lives of these men and women are put on the line each and every day they walk out the door, working their regular shift or an “off-duty gig”, so that I can freely come and go about my daily business or run a half marathon knowing they’d be there to catch me if I fell.

I am deeply proud of the service my husband offers to the Town of Chapel Hill and I am sincerely grateful for the Sheriff’s Department here in our little town of Pittsboro. And while we’re continually asked to say “thank you” to the soldiers we see in the airports or out and about, please don’t forget to acknowledge your local law enforcement and fire and rescue workers as well. They are the ones keeping you safe here at home - everyday.

Neighbors

Posted on: Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008 in: Bear Creek, Development, Musings, Pittsboro

I bet you think you know what a good neighbor is… I thought I did, too, when I lived in Northern Virginia - 12 miles from Washington, DC…in the same neighborhood, on the exact same street I grew up on.

I had no idea what a good neighbor was until I moved to the country. When I tell you I live in the country, take my word for it. I am 10 miles from a grocery store of sub-standard quality. No fast food/pizza/Chinese delivery is available to us. We don’t have cable and the only “high speed” Internet service offered is a satellite, which is debateable and less than dependable at best. And now that I think about it, I’m not real sure we have a “911″ system (note to self - ask the hubby about this one). What I do have is awesome neighbors.
I haven’t just come to this realization, I’ve known it since the weekend of July 4, 2002. That’s the weekend the pump went out on our well (oh yeah, we don’t have “city water” either. Everyone out here has their own well). And that’s when I first met the Kecks. I won’t go into detail about how our relationship grew just know that it did and that I know if ever I needed ANYTHING I could simply walk through the woods and down my neighbor’s drive.
You know, when I lived in Springfield in a sprawling, very well-established neighborhood I didn’t even know my neighbors’ names. And many of the backyards were equipped with 6 foot high fences so you didn’t even have to associate with your neighbors. The houses are so close that in the summer time when your windows are open you can hear everyone talking on the patios outside. But back then, I didn’t know any better. I accepted this “neighborly way of living” and I didn’t even know I was cramped. I’m wiser now.
It’s been a test of patience this week here in the country. My car’s been in the shop since Sunday night, the lawn tractor went to the doctor yesterday afternoon and the “farm truck” is at the top of the drive waiting patiently for the starter to be replaced. We don’t have a big “spread” here in Bear Creek but going from a 1/4 acre lot in a neighborhood on the outskirts of Washington, DC to 6 acres in the middle of North Carolina did and does present its challenges.
Thank God for good neighbors…

Costly Jordan Lake clean-up rules hit an interesting speed bump

North Carolina’s Rules Review Commission met Thursday to look over the state Environmental Management Commission’s proposed rules for cleaning up Jordan Lake — a key part of state government’s initiative to force clean-up of the manmade lake, an effort that’s drawn criticism from local governments for [...]
